Transforming Walgreens Pharmacy Platforms

Context / Role
As User Experience Director at Walgreens Boots Alliance, I led the transformation of enterprise pharmacy platforms used across thousands of retail locations. This multi-year initiative modernized legacy systems, improved operational efficiency, and delivered a consistent, user-centered experience for pharmacists and staff. I built and scaled a global design organization, established design systems, and partnered with executives to align experience strategy with business, clinical, and regulatory priorities.

Challenge
- Legacy pharmacy software was fragmented, inconsistent, and difficult for expert users.
- Multiple distributed teams caused inconsistent design and user experiences.
- Scaling design across global teams while adhering to strict healthcare and regulatory requirements.

Approach
- Built a multidisciplinary design studio of UX designers, researchers, content strategists, and product designers.
- Created the Walgreens Pharmacy Design System: UX principles, visual standards, component libraries, and content guidelines for consistency and scalability.
- Introduced Design Operations to unify intake, workflows, and delivery practices across Agile teams.
- Developed user-centered frameworks informed by nationwide pharmacist research, including the “Research in a Box” methodology.
- Partnered with executives to align design strategy with business goals and regulatory compliance.
